Vegan Eats in Vienna & Salzburg

I’ve started to put together some mini food diaries from my travels over the past couple of years, and I want to start with Austria. I’ve done a couple of these posts already for Bristol and London, and you’ll find vegan hotspots in most of my travel posts, but here’s the first proper instalment! The staff in most restaurants were so friendly, and often gave me the best table because I was alone. So, if you’re looking for a lone vegan adventure, head to Austria!

I found ALL of these restaurants using Happy Cow and posted my reviews and photos on there. If you’d like to check it out, my profile is here.

Veggiez (Opernring)

Let’s kick it off with the best meal I had on this trip: the steak bowl (€12.90) followed by a chocolate tart and earl grey tea. This place is a chain with a couple of branches in the city, but this was the one I was closest to. They seated me on a lovely table upstairs and I really took my time enjoying the food over a book.

Swing Kitchen

This 100% vegan burger place has a huge range of wraps, burgers and sides. Most of their burgers are around €9 and absolutely delicious! You can eat inside their super chic restaurant, or do what I did and hop on the subway and enjoy it in your hotel bed while watching some Netflix!

Landtmann’s Jausen Station

This was so unexpected – an outdoor restaurant at Schonbrunn Palace with a plethora of vegan options. It was a beautiful sunny day so I sat outside, and ordered the Austrian Potato Pasta (€9.50) which comprised of some potato filled pasta, pesto, spring onions and pine nuts. They also make a Lentil Curry, Overnight Oats, Tofu Scramble, and Milkshakes.

backWERK

My one pick for Salzburg is a Subway-esque fast food place that I got lunch from each day. I tried the Tofu Wrap and Schnitzel Burger and definitely preferred the latter, though both were nice and cheap pick-me-ups halfway through the day.

Tian Bistro am Spittelberg

This was definitely the most fancy restaurant I ate at in Vienna and loved every second – the staff were so attentive and gave me a lovely secluded outdoor table. I tried the Raphaello and if I’m being totally honest, I’m still not really sure what it was! It was made up of mouth-watering polenta and shiitake mushroom sauce. I could’ve eaten it by the barrel.

Easy-Going Bakery

As the name would suggest, this was a sweet, laid-back little bakery where I picked up a much needed chocolate brownie. I wasn’t quite clued up on plastic back then – it wasn’t really on my radar so I do apologise for the single use aspect of this photo… nevertheless, the brownie was great and I’d go back to this place (just take my own container this time!). They also do cute little cake pops which looked yummy.
