6 Vegan Locations In Bristol

Continuing in the spirit of my 6 Vegan Locations In London post, it’s time to turn my attention to my new home city! I can never quite stick to a nice round 5, so here are my top 6 picks from everywhere I’ve tried so far. According to a study completed last month, Bristol is the vegan capital of the world. This study analysed data from Google to determine the city with the most vegan-related Google searches, and Bristol surpassed every other city in the world. To be honest, I’m not surprised – everywhere you turn there’s a vegan shop (food and otherwise), it’s home to Viva! and three quarters of Bristol MPs are veggie or vegan (who knew?!). Anyway, onto my picks…

1. Grounded

Let’s start with the first meal of the day and my first Bristol vegan encounter. This place is a few minutes’ walk from my house so I’ve spent quite a lot of time and money in here (and never regretted that decision). We always go here for brunch but they also have cakes and vegan cheese for pizzas which, according to Happy Cow, are great. Top tip: they usually give you way too much toast in the Vegan Brekkie, so if the kitchen’s not too busy, they’re always happy to swap a couple of slices out for extra potatoes or hash brows – or anything else you want in stead! There are two branches of Grounded and a very similar place called Tinto Lounge which has all the same good stuff.

2. Vx

Possibly the most famous vegan spot in the city, this place offers junk food galore. If you’re on a health kick and needing something indulgent, one trip to Vx will sort all of your cravings out. I’ve been here twice now and was sad to find out they’ve discontinued their Mac ‘n’ Cheese toastie, but all my other faves were still there. Prices range from £3-£7, so it won’t break the bank either (unless you buy one of everything, which I might be guilty of doing…).

3. The Florist

Calling all vegan instagrammers! This cocktail bar/restaurant isn’t exclusively vegan, but their offerings are delicious. I recently visited and had the burger and chocolate orange doughnut board for dessert and absolutely loved both. This is, as would be expected, a little more pricey but perfect for a special occasion or treating yourself. It also has three different bars across the many floors and a neon sign/flower wall hybrid – what more could you want?!

4. Pie Baby

Lesser talked about but deserving of all the vegan attention: this couple-owned pie restaurant inside the Golden Lion Pub on Gloucester Road (sorry – a lot of these are close by my house!). They often do deals like £5 for a pie and a side and they’re amazing. I’ve had the mushroom stroganoff pie and my boyfriend tried the mexican-style, but I want to head back there pronto to try the Mac ‘n’ Cheese one – my ultimate weakness! Their garlic mayo dip is also by far the best I’ve tried since going vegan and the garlic fries are worth going for alone. The pub itself is okay but I can’t help thinking these guys deserve their own restaurant.

5. Oowee Vegan

If you live in Bristol, you’ve probably heard of Oowee – but have you heard of Oowee Vegan? There’s a dedicated branch in the city centre which also delivers, serving dirty fries, burgers, and fried chicken with chips. Again, this is a little more pricey for what it is, but you get huge portions and you honestly wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between this and its non-vegan counterpart, if that’s what you’re looking for.

6. Taste of Napoli

A little bonus at the end because I couldn’t leave it out. This little Italian shop is located a few minutes’ walk from Cabot Circus in Broadmead, and I head there every time I’m shopping. It’s like stepping into Italy – everyone in there (customers and staff alike) seem to be Italian and the food transports me back there. I’ve tried a couple of their calzones, Frittatinas and Crocches, but they also do pizza slices, paninis and sweet treats. I haven’t actually taken any photos of the food – clearly I’m always too excited to remember to get my phone out before I’ve scoffed everything. The prices are great and it’s nice to support a smaller, family-run business who are making such a huge effort for us vegans.

Where would you recommend in Bristol?
